ABA Therapy Q&A

What is ABA therapy?

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy is an evidence-based approach that applies learning principles to modify behavior. ABA therapy helps children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other behavior disorders by teaching them and their families skills to support positive behaviors.

ABA therapy uses positive reinforcement to encourage positive behavior changes. When the desired behavior is rewarded, children (and adults) are more likely to continue that behavior.

How does positive reinforcement work in ABA therapy?

ABA therapy also implements antecedent-behavior-consequences (ABCs) to help children and their families understand why a behavior emerges and how changing the consequence of that action can lead to behavior modification.

The antecedent is what happens right before the behavior occurs — asking your child to put their toys away, for example. The behavior is how your child responds — yells “no” or has a tantrum. The consequence is how you react to that behavior.

When you provide a consequence to negative behavior, such as time out combined with instructions about what you want the child to do differently, your child learns that their behavior won’t get them what they want.

It’s equally important to reward positive behavior, and do so in a way tailored to your child. It could be praise, an extra five minutes with the toy, or another treat your child values.

How can ABA therapy help my child?

In addition to supporting positive behavior modification, ABA therapy helps children increase their language and communications skills. It can also enhance your child’s attention, memory, and social skills.

ABA therapy is also highly adaptable and can work in various environments. Parents and caregivers also learn new ways to support their child during ABA therapy, which helps create a more harmonious home life for everyone.
